STONEWALLING & BRICKWORK RE-POINTING

The use of natural, often locally sourced, stone as a building material is seen widely in heritage buildings. Often, in grander homes and buildings the facade is in hand made brick while the side and rear is rough stone. Historically this has been mortared with a lime based mix although frequently this has been re-pointed more recently with a strong cement based mortar. Often the use of a strong cement mortar causes the stone itself to spall and flake as moisture evaporates through the more porous stone. This can be rectified by cleaning out and using a soft or hydraulic lime mix for re-pointing. This can be laborious and time consuming but ensures that the fabric of the building itself will not deteriorate. It can also rectify issues of damp. Le Breton Traditonal can undertake all aspects of stonewalling and re-pointing and can provide reference to specialist stone and render cleaning services if required.

Brick steps Removing render and repointing

Dry stone walling and banking is a useful way to create terracing and banking without the harsh lines of blockwork walls, which will often crack over time as the ground as a whole moves. If done well these features have a greater longevity as there is no mortar to breakdown and the wall is a part of the bank rather than just placed in front of it. They also merge much more naturally with their surroundings due to the lack of hard edges and as small plants grow out from between the gaps

Prices vary depending on the type of stone required or available on site and the finished look desired
